Train your damn dog!

So I take my dog over to the dog park often off of Trinity and Germantown Parkway. There are always several pit bulls there off-leash, playing and socializing well the other dogs. Surprise, surprise.

Somebody always shows up with some German Shepherd or some type of mutt dog with serious aggression problems. When my dog tries to play, they growl, yelp and snap like crazy. Naturally the owners smile sheepishly and shrug their shoulders as if to say, “it’s not so bad.” Just because I own pit bull doesn’t mean that he has the capacity to be barked, growled and snapped at. He has never reacted with an ounce of aggression–Not so much as a growl or snap. But I know that no matter how much aggression the dogs bring, if he shows an ounce back it will be because he’s a pit bull.

Pits have actually been the most friendly, well trained dogs I have seen on Trinity. It always makes me laugh to see the other dog owners nail-biting when they see pit bulls playing with other dogs. They’re always “shocked at how well behaved they are.” I’m always shocked at how ignorant people can be.

I am not a drug dealer.

I just read some guy’s blog about pit bulls and why he hates them. One of his rediculous reasons is that they are the preferred dog of drug dealers.

Wow.

I would hope that I’m not mistaken for a drug dealer while walking my pit bull. I hope that I don’t get the urge to sell crack or weed in my golf-course community.

If you hate the breed, then hate the breed. It’s like a tv station: if you don’t like it, then don’t partake. But the stereotypes are astounding and I am appauled at the ignorance that I see from Middle Class Americans when it comes to pit bulls and the people who own them. It’s like me saying that only pricks own Rotts. It’s ludacris.

And I’m not talking about the rapper.

I grew up in a pretty rough neighborhood in Toledo, Ohio. In my neighborhood we had a lot of tough-looking dogs. I remember standing on my grandmother’s back porch and looking two houses down to watch the dog fights. I was as young as 5 years old and I saw men walking into the back yard with all kinds of dogs: bulldogs, dobermans, boxers, mutts, and Pit Bull Terriers. I have always loved dogs, and I was riveted. Not by the fighting, or the yelping, or thel large sums of money that changed hands throughout the day. I was fascinated by the beauty and majesty of the dogs. I couln’t take my eyes off them.

I was enthralled by Pit Bulls. The muscle tone, the variance in color from dog to dog, the bite power, the danger, and most of all the mystique. I always told myself that I was going to get myself a Pit Bull someday.

At the age of 27, I finally got one and I loved him so much I got a second Pit Bull two years later. I wouldn’t dream of forcing a dog to fight, and I have the deepest disdain for anyone who takes pleasure in fighting Pit Bulls. Now that I have two, I have a plethora of experiences, encounters, and stories to share. Not to mention the depth of research that I’ve done on the Pit Bull. I must say that I find it frustrating when I can’t find information or proper training techniques for bully breeds. I want neat stickers and shirts for my dogs just as much as anyone else. I want toys specific to my breed and I want to talk about my dogs without worrying about the looks I get from the rest of Middle Class America for owning Pit Bulls. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard those stupid-ass Michael Vick jokes. Now I want to find others who share my enthusiasm for the breed (especially in Memphis).

People look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them that I own two pit bulls. I speak very proper English, I have a successful career, and I look nothing like Michael Vick. I fell in love with the breed as a kid, but for all the wrong reasons. The love for the breed is still strong, but the motive is more complex.
